For the second part of the trip I took a flight from Tokyo to Sapporo and after a 6 hour drive all the way up to the northern Hokkaido I met up with Sato from Streamcollect. After having some local soba noodles for lunch, we then decided to check out a few rivers in the area and see if we can catch myself a Japanese char. It didn’t take long after I got one, and as soon as I had one in the net I couldn’t help but be adore it’s incredible colours and patterns of spectrum that I hadn’t witnessed before. After completing Japanese char mission, then we relocated closer to Streamcollect fishing lodge, and refocused on targeting wild rainbows instead. Over a few days we had plenty of action, with plenty of good size fish landed. Flies that I usually fish with in Australia and New Zealand seemed to work well in Japan too, with Prince Nymph probably being that most effective one. Something else worth mentioning is that Japan, and especially remote areas of Hokkaido, has a large population of bears. For that reason fishermen should always carry a bear spray and cowbells to let animals know of their presence.
