Catching a so called Australian Salmon wading the flats of the South Coast NSW has been on my list for a few years now. It’s not that easy to find an inlet or an estuary where they’re easily accessible within a cast of a fly rod. These fish tent to move up and down the beach or a river and locating them can be pretty tricky. Add driving 4-5h to get to one of the potential spots and that makes a whole trip a challenge. This time I relied on my friend who lives much closer to one of those spots than I do, and she had fished that estuary before with some success. After a little bit of planning we decided to stay at the campsite nearby for couple of nights, sleep in the morning have a breakky at the local cafe and give it a go at salmon around noon which looked like the best time to aim for the low tide. Oh boy, and what a great time we had. After we chose the right fly we were catching fish after fish. Summary of that trip are in the photos below.
