2026 Finnish Lapland

After travelling 15,000 kilometres by air, 35 hours later we are finally in the car, travelling through the Baltic countries up to Finnish Lapland. Our target is the gorgeous Nordic Grayling, hopefully on a dry fly if we get lucky. Autumn is settling in there; by the second week of September, most rivers close for salmon spawning, and fishing generally slows down. However, we are up for the challenge because it is the most amazing time of the year. You can still catch fish, while campgrounds, rivers, and accommodation are much quieter. Having a high chance of seeing the Aurora, combined with the incredible autumn colour changes, just adds to the magic. How good is that?
After spending some time using our nymphing rigs to quickly find fish without success, we soon realised that a dry-dropper rig is the way to go in this part of the world. Consequently, most fish were caught on a dry fly or a little nymph underneath. Here is a bunch of photos taken in Finnish Lapland, along with a little map attached to give you an idea of our approximate route.
